educator, researcher, author and trauma expert focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and serving kids with marginalized identities

Dr. Gwen Bass

Inclusion starts with seeing one another clearly.

THERE IS ALWAYS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

I help organizations, schools, government agencies, teachers, and families build accessible experiences for all types of people — especially those who are most vulnerable to falling through the cracks or being excluded.

Hi, I’m Gwen.

I’m an educator, facilitator, and adult learning expert. I provide training and consultation for organizations, schools, and caregivers seeking to be more inclusive and equity-oriented.

Drawing on my own experience — which you can read about in my book Immaculate Misconception — and years of research in education and social work, I help individuals and teams create identity-affirming environments that promote belonging.

I have expertise in: Universal Design for Learning; adult learning theory; culturally responsive pedagogy; special education; Transformative SEL; trauma-informed education; child welfare; LGBTQ+ advocacy; mental health & well-being.

How do we create conditions where everyone can be their best selves?

My work focuses on:

fostering equity & inclusion

Our sense of belonging is informed by subtle signals— messages we receive across our lifetime about which parts of us do and don’t belong. I help clients align their intentions, values, and actions, so they can create environments where everyone feels seen and valued.

empowering marginalized kids

Kids with unique identities and life experiences are often misunderstood and mislabeled. Educators and caregivers don’t just need “advice” — they need consistent, trustworthy support from someone who gets it. I help develop strategies that strengthen bonds and promote resilience.

DESIGNING FOR belonging

Trauma, neurodiversity, and culture all influence how we understand and navigate the world. With experience in special education, child welfare, counseling, and adult learning, I design trainings that help leaders and educators promote psychological safety and well-being.

Every person deserves to be successful.

I equip caregivers, educators, and organizations with identity-affirming, trauma-responsive tools so they can create environments where everyone thrives.

Diverse offerings for you and those you lead

For Parents & Caregivers

There’s no onboarding manual for raising kids with unique and diverse needs. When marble jars and bedtime routines just aren’t cutting it, I help parents and caregivers find new pathways toward an easier home life.

For Educators & Teachers

Teachers and educational leaders need and deserve support. I provide engaging professional development opportunities that build on participants’ strengths and leave them with tools they can use immediately.

For Organizations & Agencies

People thrive when they feel seen and valued. I work with nonprofits, government agencies, and private organizations to design, implement, and evaluate equity-oriented programming that reaches people in the margins.

the values & foundations of my work

Mainstream systems are built on a narrow idea of what success looks like.

What we know is that these norms just don’t work for everyone. Teaching, leading, and learning don’t have to be boring or prescriptive—in fact, they really shouldn’t be. By embracing opportunities for equity and inclusivity, we enhance our ability to innovate.

My work asks educators, administrators, organizational leaders, and caregivers to be curious about their preconceived notions of how people engage and flourish. Healing happens in relationship. Cultural relevance and visibility matter. And many of our most memorable lessons are learned through mistakes.
